I am really quite hopelessly devastated - but Jackie made me, at least for a moment, want to try to want to try to be brave. It's just wrong, and her effortful attempt to imitate Jackie's voice makes her language sound stilted.
It significantly takes away from the poise and intelligence that Jackie conveyed when she spoke.
The script doesn't help. For example, when responding to the narrator about what future 1st ladies will do with the items Jackie acquired for the restoration, Portman responds by saying how in the past these items could be thrown out or given away and ends it there, which makes her sound shallow and dull.
In the original interview she explains that a law was passed so that these items, if unwanted, will be preserved in the Smithsonian so that their historical value will be conserved and appreciated for generations to come.
Also, the way the movie goes into Jackie's experience of and reaction to the trauma of JFK's assassination seems intrusive and cruel.
I couldn't get past the first 20 minutes or so and I'm disappointed I wasted my money. Loved this movie but beware that it is VERY dark and some may not appreciate the portrayal of Jackie Kennedy as it is far from what the public thinks of her.
I liked this as it showed the very human side of what it must have been like for her to go through such a horrible ordeal.
Natalie Portman truly excels depicting the life of Jackie Kennedy Onassis. Impressively filmed, we see the behind-the-scenes at the funeral of her murdered husband and the time afterward.
Deftly handling an interviewer and jostling with her beliefs with a priest, we see what makes her hold up through it all.
Stunning stoicism on her part throughout. Imagine your husband or wife sitting next to you one second then shot in the head in the next, then deciding to show the world how brave you are with two small children in tow.
Natalie Portman expertly captures and conveys the class, courage and moral strength of the late First Lady. Sometimes the pace of the film lags for a bit here and there but this does not detract from the overall magnificence of this production.
A very worthwhile movie; I recommend it to those who like politics. I did. I was a senior in high school, eating lunch in our cafeteria, when the news that President Kennedy had been shot was announced.
The horror and shock pervaded everywhere that day. For whatever reasons Jacqueline Kennedy may have chosen to conduct the funeral for her husband, it is difficult to believe that all her efforts were entirely for herself, as she saw her husband as a head of state and included important elements that underscored this fact with a great lot of dignity.
It was enriching to be reminded that there once was such a quality within the White House, as it seems to be so glaringly absent these days.
Jacqueline Kennedy had her own signature by which she could let the American people into many aspects of this presidency, and during that particular time, she set the tone for a nation to mourn and then to move onward.
It was important and appreciated by most of the nation. This film does a good job of defining that time and portraying the curious and turbulent avenues along which grief can travel, as well as the odd and often insensitive vortex of events that circled around it.
The costume designer got the heft of Jacqui's veil just right Musical scores seem to always be a difficult component of a film and the music for this one can be ham handed.
It's not that this film is one of the greatest we will see and it will disturb those who wish for a fast pace and to be entertained.
It's about grief and how humans can conduct themselves under its spell in an exceptional circumstance. It's a good study. See all reviews.

Kennedy , a journalist visits Jacqueline Kennedy for an interview at her home in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts regarding her husband's legacy.
After Jackie reflects upon her televised tour of The White House , the journalist turns to inquiries about John F. Kennedy's assassination and its aftermath for Jackie and her family.
She talks about events shortly prior to the assassination, before describing her shock and horror in reaction. Kennedy soon appears and shares her grief, escorting her back to Washington.
Jackie expresses her deep concern for the well-being of her children in adjusting to the loss of their father. Robert continues to support her whilst dealing with his own sadness, and helps her in planning the funeral and looking after the family.
She is seen struggling to sleep and becoming reliant on medications and alcohol. She is also seen regularly seeking spiritual counsel from a priest.
Robert F. Robert insists to all that Jackie not be informed of this by anyone but himself; he will tell her when he feels the time is right.
However Jackie finds out about it almost immediately, and condemns him for withholding it from her. After John F. Kennedy Jr. After the State funeral of John F.
Kennedy , Jackie tells the priest that she contemplated suicide following the assassination. She then admits that she clearly remembers what happened during the assassination and feels unbearable pain and guilt that she did not act in some way to protect her husband.
As the interview ends, Jackie makes it clear to the journalist that she maintains the right to control which parts of the interview may come to press and which parts are to be withheld.
The film concludes with Jackie having her miscarried and stillborn children's coffins being re-interred next to John F. Kennedy's assassination and his burial , showing Jackie at both her most vulnerable and her most graceful".
Steven Spielberg was originally set to produce the series, and later left the project. He stated that although he did not have any history or knowledge about John F.
Kennedy's assassination, he connected with Jacqueline Kennedy. Thus, Jackie is the first film that he could approach from a woman's perspective.
He grew more interested in Kennedy after learning more about her. To him, her life after the assassination "had all the elements that you need for a movie: rage, curiosity, and love.
I wrote two or three more drafts with his guidance, but over a very condensed period of time. So while it took six years from first draft to completion, most of those six years were not active years.
In April , it was announced that Rachel Weisz would star in the titular role, with Darren Aronofsky set to direct and produce the film, from Oppenheim's script.
Natalie Portman was approached to star in the film in September , but her casting was not confirmed until May Schlesinger Jr. One of three interviews she gave following her husband's assassination, it was kept private throughout her life.
Portman said she was intimidated at first, and her initial knowledge of Kennedy was just a "superficial understanding of [Kennedy] as a fashion plate.
Mimicking Jackie's ranging vocals was pivotal for Portman, since Aronofsky said "conquering Kennedy's vocals was the key to the rest of the film.
Principal photography on the film began in December in a Paris -area studio, where most of the interior scenes were shot. Mica Levi composed the film's accompanying score.

The site's critical consensus reads, " Jackie offers an alluring peek into a beloved American public figure's private world — and an enthralling starring performance from Natalie Portman in the bargain.
David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a highly positive review, writing that the film is "Extraordinary in its piercing intimacy and lacerating in its sorrow.
She noted that letters, as well as a taped phone conversation between President Johnson and Jackie, which occurred on December 2, , showed that the former first lady and the Johnsons were cooperating well.

View All Critic Reviews May 31, Anchored by a beguiling starring performance, maudlin exercise Jackie offers a tantalizing glimpse into the private affairs of Camelot in its darkest hour that ultimately barely leaves the surface.
In this R-rated drama based on real events, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Natalie Portman fights through grief and trauma to regain her faith, console her children, and define her family's legacy following the assassination of her husband, President John F.
Not only does Portman look and sound exactly like this pillbox hat-popping American her public persona at least , but the rest of the period aesthetics prove spot-on as well.
The minutes, hours, and days following JFK's assassination that played out in public get re-created to a hauntingly realistic - almost naturalistic - degree-a blood-covered Jackie cradling her husband's body, Lyndon Johnson getting sworn in as president aboard Air Force One, JFK, Jr.
If only the script had that same meticulous drive to uncover the truth. Screenwriter Noah Oppenheim barely gets the dust off of the marble veneer of this icon let alone puts a crack in it for all to see inside.
It's something more than superficial but far less than satisfying. That Portman makes it all so watchable despite these shortcomings stands testament to her awe-strikingly chameleonic turn.
Insomuch as director Pablo Larrain deserves plaudits for the exacting details brought to life as a result of the brilliant casting and production design, he likewise deserves demerits for the music.
Mica Levi's overpowering orchestration not only literally sounds like a funeral dirge, it's so obtrusive that it drowns out the actual drama. At times, it's so loud and overused that it's almost laughable in an ironical way.
Who needs the cast commentary of Mystery Science Theater when the film's own score sounds like the outro to a '50s soap opera?
To Sum It Up: Camelot I know it gives a person pause. Jeff B Super Reviewer. Sep 11, What a disappointing movie this was. The storytelling is awful.
The movie's scope is so narrow - it's titled 'Jackie' but we learn very little about her, since it focuses on her redecoration of the White House and the assassination and its aftermath.
That's it! And even then, director Pablo Larrain somehow manages to botch it. He gets Jackie's spirit wrong, and manages to take one of the most dramatic events in American history and make it feel melodramatic.
He doesn't give us anything about the larger context of her life, Kennedy's Presidency, or America at the time, and even in trying to tell us what he does, inexplicably leaves out the indelible image of JKF Jr.
Neither comes close to pulling off what are admittedly difficult roles. The dialog between Jackie and the priest John Hurt is banal and cringe-inducing.
The interview with reporter Billy Crudup is as well. I am loathe to write extreme reviews particularly when on this site you see maximum ratings for simply good or mediocre movies, or the reverse, decent films getting trashed.
I am also into historical films such as this and frankly, normally adore Natalie Portman. And yet here I am, utterly annoyed and giving 'Jackie' an extremely low rating.
This could and should have been a far, far better movie. How insulting to the Kennedys, and to history.
